Gas candle lab

Skills learned- Working with gases allows us to understand physical and chemical changes. First I learned that carbon dioxide is colorless, odorless, and is not combustible. The gas has very little physical traits. I also learned that mixing vinegar and baking soda produces the gas carbon dioxide. The skills we learned helps us in the future by being able to differ carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide. It could possibly save our lives. Concepts- Since carbon dioxide can not burn The gas smothered the flame and took the oxygen away from the flame. The state of matter did not change and there was no chemical change because the gas does not burn and it did not change into a new substance. The candle went through a physical and a chemical change. The candle burning made the particles in the candle disperse and you could tell because there was smoke. A physical change was the color of the candle changed to black. Another physical change was the wax melting. It remained the same substance but formed a new shape as a solid. This lab helped me understand which gases are safe a which aren't. It proved that gas can be used in a productive way like putting out fires or creating one for cooking. It helps us with our daily task.
